Premier League team of the week returns with Man City star Foden shining

Premier League football returned properly on Friday night with the first full round of fixtures post-lockdown. The 10 games threw up a couple of surprise results, while Manchester City ensured Liverpool's title celebrations are put on hold for now. The defending champions are well representated in the team of the week, so too are top-four chasing Chelsea and Wolves as we run through the best XI...

Goalkeeper: Mat Ryan (Brighton) - 7.43 rating

A game perhaps best remembered for the coming together between Neal Maupay and Bernd Leno that ended the latter's season, Mat Ryan put in a solid shift for Brighton in their 2-1 win over Arsenal. The Australian was unable to deny Nicolas Pepe from putting the Gunners ahead, but his five saves kept the Seagulls in the game until the very end, which was key given Maupay's injury time winner.

Right-back: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea) - 7.95 rating

Cesar Azpilicueta has registered five assists in the Premier League this season, two of which came in the space of three minutes in Chelsea's 2-1 win at Aston Villa on Sunday. The Spaniard's assists for Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud came from two of three key passes, while Azpilicueta was defensively sound as he made two interceptions and one tackle to land the man of the match gong at Villa Park.

Centre-back: Kortney Hause (Aston Villa) - 7.78 rating

While Aston Villa fell to a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Chelsea, Kortney Hause put in a solid rearguard performance to ensure the Villans remained in with a chance of securing all three points. The centre-back managed three shots in the defeat and won seven aerial duels, more than any other player, to help make this XI. 11 additional clearances reinforced what was a commendable showing in the Villa backline.

Centre-back: Mason Holgate (Everton) - 7.78 rating

Partnering Hause at the heart of the defence, Mason Holgate put in a fine shift for Everton in their 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Sunday evening. It was hardly an eye catching affair at Goodison Park, yet Holgate was on hand to limit Liverpool's attack to just three shots on target in the Merseyside Derby. Eight clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and three aerial duels won was enough to for Holgate to earn the WhoScored man of the match award in a clean sheet attaining display.

Left-back: Ben Chilwell (Leicester) - 8.07 rating

Ben Chilwell must've thought he'd won it for Leicester at Vicarage Road when his stunning strike cannoned in off the post to put the Foxes ahead at Watford. His goal came from his only shot in the 1-1 draw, while off the ball, Chilwell was solid as he made four tackles and one interception. Craig Dawson's late bicycle kick may have ensured the spoils were shared in Saturday's lunchtime kick off, yet England's starting left-back makes the Premier League team of the week after his star man showing.

Right midfield: Matt Ritchie (Newcastle) - 8.99 rating

Goals for Matt Ritchie this season - one. Assists for Matt Ritchie this season - one. Both came in Newcastle's thumping 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Sunday as the Magpies made light work of the Blades after the break. Ritchie's assist came for Allan Saint-Maximin's opener to set Newcastle on their way to victory, that coming from one of two key passes, while his strike midway through the second half effectively sealed the victory and guaranteed him a spot in this side.

Premier League team of the week returns with Man City star Foden shining

Central midfield: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton) - 8.48 rating

After a run of four defeats in five prior to lockdown, Southampton needed to make a running start as the season resumed and they did so impressively, earning a 3-0 win at Norwich. Newly-appointed captain James Ward-Prowse put in a fine shift in the middle of the park, notably excelling off the ball where he made six interceptions to help turn defence into attack for Saints and make the team of the week.

Central midfield: Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) - 8.35 rating

The first of two Manchester City representatives in the first Premier League team of the week after lockdown, Bernardo Silva helped himself to his sixth and seventh assists of the season, those coming for Phil Foden and David Silva to score. The Portugal international's pair of assists came from four key passes, while a pass success rate of 96.9% reinforced WhoScored strengths of 'holding on to the ball' and 'passing' and ensures Silva features here.

Left midfield: Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 9.28 rating

The second Manchester City player in this XI, Phil Foden was superb as the Cityzens made light work of Burnley at the Etihad Stadium. Foden set City on their way to a 5-0 home win and added his second just after the hour mark to cap his best rated Premier League performance. The youngster could have had an assist, too, having made one key pass, while two dribbles saw him earn the WhoScored man of the match award.

Striker: Raul Jimenez (Wolves) - 8.68 rating

One of the form teams pre-lockdown, Wolves made light work of West Ham in east London over the weekend to maintain their push for a Champions League finish with Raul Jimenez again earning the plaudits. The Mexican frontman netted his 14th league goal of the season in the solid victory in the capital, hitting the back of the net with one of his four shots, while two successful dribbles and four aerial duels earned Jimenez the man of the match gong.

Striker: Danny Ings (Southampton) - 9.56 rating

Saving the best until last, Danny Ings enjoyed a fine showing in Saints' 3-0 win at Norwich. The English striker put the south coast side ahead shortly after the break before turning provider for Stuart Armstrong five minutes later. Ings could have put Saints ahead on the first half having struck the woodwork, and his last man tackle in the opening moments of the encounter kept the scores level. With three tackles in all, Ings is our Premier League player of the week with a WhoScored rating of 9.56.
