@neumi17 Now try to imagine how this game would have turned out if the ref said "No penalty" and told Kane to bugger off. In knockout games with such close margins (most have won by only 1 goal) penalties are simply too punitive to be tossed around like candy. If it isn't a serious foul or an obvious mistake I just don't want to hear about it.

@tkr aaaah 1 bad England joke too many - they won it a minute after I posted. Sorry England, you can go lose another final now.

@Zoltan Maybe England is waiting for penalties because they know they can't score.

@neumi17 That's why I can only watch them while at "work". It's a decent distraction, and to be fair this has probably been their best performance so far at Euros.

@sarigginsUSA I guess dude's leg was so beefy it hurt Kane's foot. Makes you really wonder what's going on in that VAR room. Does the ref just do what he's told or is he the authority on the pitch?

@Icarax I was lucky enough to see this game live and agree about how they get tired after 70. Di Maria was dead and messi runs only when he wants to. There was a strong sense that they were happy with a 2-0 and saving themselves for the finals. They are not as effective as they have been at the world cup but they have the quality for great plays like De Paul's assist and ofcourse Messi's play for the 2nd. I think Uruguay would actually be an easier opponent but them vs Argentina is always a disgusting matchup and will end up looking like their last game with Brazil. Colombia will beat uruguay anyway and its their intensity that will hopefully give us a great final.

England and France can meet in the final, but no matter who wins they both suck.

@DanInter Agreed on every point, but I will give them credit for actually trying to score today. They were 50/50 with Portugal and honestly could have won before 90min if their finishing wasn't so bad. They were both awful in that regard, either team could have won 1-0.

@neumi17 That team is so lucky plus their coach and the way they play, I can't stand them. Hopefully Spain will teach them how to play football next week but without Carvajal and a few others IDK they might become the first team to win the Euros without scoring a real goal.

Only thing that troubles me is the inconsistency of penalty calls. This ref played spirit of the game, that Cucurella honestly played the ball and tried to keep the arms to his side, meaning that the handball was completely unintentional, but in other games they give penalties for any kind of handball no questions asked. FIFA will be pressured to clarify the rules on this. I just hope they don't decide on a literal textbook handball = penalty 100% the time because then we will start to see forwards aiming at somebody's arm instead of at the goal.
