Everton’s top managerial target is Atletico Madrid boss

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri wants Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone to be the club’s new manager, reports Sky Sports.

The Merseysiders sacked Ronald Koeman at the end of October and want to appoint his replacement during the international break.

David Unsworth is currently in temporary charge of Everton until a full-time manager has been appointed, with the likes of Sam Allardyce and Burnley manager Sean Dyche in the running for the Goodison Park hot seat.

However, it has now emerged that Moshiri sensationally wants to prise Simeone away from Atletico in what would be one of the most stunning appointments in Premier League history.

Simeone has established himself as one of the most revered coaches in Europe since becoming Atletico boss in December 2011 and the chances of Everton succeeding in any pursuit would appear very slim.

The tenacious 47-year-old has previously been touted with a Premier League job but only extended his Atletico deal in September and appears content in Spain despite the club’s mixed start to the season.

Everton climbed out of the bottom three over the weekend but still have a lot of work to do to ensure they are not stuck in a relegation battle for the remainder of the season.

Organising their porous defence will be a priority for Koeman’s successor, which is why you can understand Moshiri has identified Simeone as his dream appointment. In fact, only West Ham (23) have conceded more goals in the Premier League this season than the Toffees (22).
