Barca president cools talk of Suarez exit

Barcelona president Josep Mari Bartomeu has cooled speculation linking Luis Suarez with a sensational move to Manchester United.

Suarez, 29, emerged as a surprise £135m target for Jose Mourinho over the weekend as the United boss looks to transform his squad into world beaters.

However, the Barcelona striker, who is currently in talks about extending his stay with the La Liga champions, is going no where, according to the club’s president.

“We read, we listen, we see this news, but of course, our interest in this particular case is that Luis Suarez is happy at Barcelona,” he told Sky Sports.

“For me, he is probably the best striker in Europe and we want him to be with us. Right now, we are trying to extend his contract with Barcelona and he is one of our big future efforts because he is still young, he has a vision, a lot of ambition.

“He is happy at Barcelona and together with Lionel Messi and Neymar, they are really very dangerous. Everybody knows, and he knows, that our wish would be that he stops his career at Barcelona at any time he wants.”

Suarez has taken his game to another level since joining Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 in a deal worth £75m. He is widely regarded as the best No.9 in football and still has three years remaining on his existing deal with the club.

Given his affiliation with Liverpool and his past with United left-back Patrice Evra, it would seem unlikely any deal to Old Trafford would occur in the future. Since the start of last season Suarez has scored at least seven more goals than any other player in La Liga (47).
