Karim Benzema is a major doubt for the return leg of Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final clash with Manchester City after the club confirmed he has sustained a hamstring injury.
The France international spent the first half of their 0-0 draw against City on Tuesday almost entirely on the periphery before manager Zinedine Zidane replaced him at the interval.
Benzema, 28, has been in sensational goalscoring form for Madrid this season, although he has struggled with muscular injuries in 2016 having only just returned to face City in midweek.
However, he is now unlikely to play any further part in the tie and perhaps the rest of the season after scan results revealed he has damaged his hamstring.
Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (69.1 mins) is requiring fewer minutes per goal than Benzema (79.9 mins) of players to have scored at least five goals across Europe’s top five leagues this season.
