De Bruyne and Salah favourites for Player of the Year gong

As expected, Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah star on the shortlist for the official PFA Player of the Year award in the Premier League.

The duo, who are strongly tipped to compete for the top gong, are joined among the six-strong nominees by David de Gea, Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and David Silva.

There are three Manchester City players in the running then, but no place for Sergio Aguero or Eden Hazard.

The latter has had an up and down season with Chelsea, scoring 11 times, but Aguero has been prolific, scoring 21 goals and registering six assists in 25 appearances, so is perhaps the most surprising omission.

The Argentine has, in fact, earned the second highest rating from WhoScored.com this season (7.81), with Kevin De Bruyne (7.87) the only man ahead of him and earning his status as favourite.

Salah, meanwhile, is the top scorer in the top-flight as things stand, scoring 29 goals and supplying nine assists to boot.
