Manchester City legend confirms desire to return to South America

Sergio Aguero has reiterated his desire to return to boyhood club Independiente when he leaves Manchester City.

The 29-year-old left the Argentinean club to join Atletico Madrid in 2006 before moving to Manchester five years later.

Despite the fact City are on the brink of achieving something very special under Pep Guardiola, Aguero, who is now the club’s all-time record goalscorer, maintains he still wants to return to Argentina when his current deal expires.

“It came out that Milan and Real Madrid wanted me and – I don’t know where I read it – but they said, ‘They just spoiled Independiente’s dream.’ But the idea was always to go back to Independiente when my contract with City runs out in 2019,” The Daily Mirror quote Aguero as saying on international duty.

“I have an option to extend one more year with City where it’s the priority but it’s always an option. The idea is to go back. Now, I’m doing very well and hopefully we can win the cup [title], but it’s not easy.”

Despite pointing to the fact his deal expires in 2019, City have always maintained they triggered their right to an extra 12 months at the start of the year, which Guardiola has also mentioned in various press conferences since then.

Aguero has been in stunning form for City this season and has even kept Gabriel Jesus, who appeared to move ahead of him in the pecking order this year, on the bench in the last two matches.

In fact, no player has scored more Premier League goals than Aguero this season (8), while he has found the back of the net nine times in his last nine matches for City in all competitions.
