Manchester United have Oblak’s release clause in their sights

Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak at the end of the season, claims ESPN.

David de Gea will only have 12 months left to run on his existing United deal this summer and is no closer to renewing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Spain international is enduring a crisis of confidence at the moment after another error-prone performance cost United against Chelsea on Sunday.

Marcos Alonso capitalised on De Gea’s botched attempt to save Antonio Rudiger’s long range effort to draw Chelsea level in their 1-1 draw with United.

De Gea has committed an error leading to an opposition goal in three of United’s last four matches and there are now calls for Solskjaer to take the Spaniard out the firing line.

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly willing to match De Gea’s £350,000-a-week wage demands and are lining up a £60m bid for the United goalkeeper this summer.

United are reportedly willing to let contract talks drag on into next season, though they may reconsider that approach following De Gea’s latest displays.

The Red Devils remain hopeful of securing De Gea’s long-term future but have earmarked Oblak as a potential replacement for the 28-year-old.

Oblak signed a bumper new deal with Atletico earlier this month but the Spanish outfit only managed to increase his release clause by €20m to €120m (£103.5m).

The Slovenia international, who is regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the world, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past and Solskjaer’s side believe his release clause is within reach.

Oblak is one of several high profile Atletico players that have reservations about the club’s future, though it remains to be seen whether he’d be willing to join United if they cannot offer Champions League football next season.

Since joining Atletico in 2014, Oblak has kept only two fewer clean sheets (88) than he has conceded goals in La Liga (90).
