Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey could be banned for a minimum of five games after being charged by the Football Association with racially abusing Wolves midfielder Romain Saiss.
Shelvey, 24, has been a revelation for Newcastle in the Championship this season but is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after using abusive language about an opponent’s race, ethnicity or nationality.
The incident took place three minutes from the end of Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves on 17 September, in which Moroccan midfielder Saiss was making his debut for Paul Lambert’s side.
Shelvey has been given until 16 November to respond to the FA charge, in which they have deemed the offence as an ‘aggravated breach’ of rules.
If found guilty, the former Swansea midfielder will miss a minimum of five games, which would rule him out of upcoming matches against Leeds, Blackburn, Hull, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham.
No player has registered more assists in the Championship this season than Shelvey (5).
