Inter target Dzeko signs surprise Roma deal

Inter have been dealt a decisive blow in their pursuit of Edin Dzeko after Roma announced a new deal for the Bosnian striker.

Dzeko has been heavily linked with a move to Inter throughout the summer and Antonio Conte’s side were confident of landing the former Manchester City striker.

Conte wanted to overhaul Inter’s attacking options for the new season by signing Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku but has only signed the latter.

Inter tried to include former captain Mauro Icardi in a deal that would see Dzeko join the club but the 33-year-old has instead signed a new three-year deal with Roma running until the summer of 2022.

“Over the last few weeks I have realised just how much the club wanted me to stay,” Dzeko told the club’s official website.

“My conversations with the board, the work we’ve been doing with the coach, the relationship with my teammates and the love of the fans has made me realise once again what I had already learned during these four years - that Roma is my home.

“Here there is everything we need to win something and I am delighted to be able to stay here even longer.”

Dzeko has followed in the footsteps of Nicolo Zaniolo and Cengiz Under in pledging his long-term future to Roma this week.

The veteran striker has spent the last four years at Roma and has scored 62 goals in 137 league games for the club.
