Poyet wants to bring Terry to China

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet wants to reunite with teammate John Terry in China, reports The London Evening Standard.

Poyet was only confirmed as Shanghai Shenhua’s new manager on Tuesday after being sacked as Real Betis boss earlier this month, but is already looking at making some big signings for the Chinese Super League side.

The 48-year-old, who played with Terry for three years at Chelsea before moving to Tottenham in 2001, has hoping a lucrative offer will convince the former England captain to end his career in China, although he may have to wait until the end of the season to secure the transfer.

Terry’s current deal with Chelsea is due to expire at the end of the season, but the 35-year-old is no longer first choice at the club and there have been no assurances Antonio Conte will look to keep the veteran defender beyond his existing contract.

Injuries have limited the Chelsea captain to just four starts in the Premier League this season and hasn’t featured since getting a six-minute cameo in their 5-0 win over Everton at the start of November. You have to go back to a 2-2 draw away to Swansea at the start of September to find the last time Terry started a league game.
