Aston Villa offer contract to Chelsea legend

Aston Villa have stepped up their shock pursuit of John Terry by offering the Chelsea captain a concrete deal that could be worth £4m a year, claims The Daily Telegraph.

The 36-year-old will leave Chelsea when his current deal expires at the end of this month and he reportedly has more than 10 realistic offers on the table as he continues to consider his next move.

Terry even hinted at retirement towards the end of last season but the former England captain has continued training on his holiday and appears set to continue playing next season.

It seemed unlikely that Terry would be willing to make the drop down from competing for Premier League titles every year to playing in the Championship when it first emerged Villa were interested, but the veteran defender has reportedly not ruled out playing for a Championship club.

Villa have made a concrete offer for the Chelsea defender, who is currently on holiday with Steve Bruce’s son Alex, which is loaded with bonuses and incentives and could even see him pocket £83,000-a-week over the course of the deal.

Terry only made nine appearances in the Premier League last season after dropping down the pecking order under Antonio Conte, so he should be in relatively good health.

Since August 2009 only Ashley Williams (10097) has completed more passes of all defenders in the Premier League than Terry (9620).
