Stoke forward signs new contract

Stoke have announced Ibrahim Afellay has extended his stay at the club by signing a new two-year deal keeping him at the club until 2019.

Afellay’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign but Stoke have moved to secure his services rather than losing him for nothing this summer.

Mark Hughes’ side pulled off a surprise swoop to land Afellay from Barcelona in 2015 after his contract expired with the La Liga champions before a serious knee injury in April 2016 ruled the Dutchman out for nearly eight months.

“I’m very happy,” he told the club’s official website. “From the first day I came to the club I felt at home and I’m looking forward to the future and to doing good things with this club. I hope we can continue to progress and develop.

“Stoke City is a great club. The way the fans support us is special – they are always behind us, especially at away games – and the people at the club are like a family.

“The injury is all in the past now. I think I’ve showed that I’m back in business and I’m just look forward now, working hard every day and trying to make the best of everything.”

Afellay has only started three games in the Premier League this season since returning from injury after Christmas and is still trying to re-establish himself in Hughes’ first-team plans, completing the full 90 minutes twice this season.
