Aston Villa want Atletico Madrid defender

Aston Villa are willing to hand Kieran Trippier a route back to England after just 12 months at Atletico Madrid, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Trippier left Tottenham to join Atletico 12 months ago in a shock transfer after being deemed surplus to requirements by then-manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The England international endured a mixed first season in Spain and his performance in Atletico's Champions League quarter-final exit to RB Leipzig was lambasted.

Villa are targetting more Premier League experience in the transfer window after avoiding relegation by the skin of their teeth last season.

Trippier has been earmarked as a potential transfer target for Dean Smith, who wants to address the club's shortcomings at full-back.

Frederic Guilbert, who joined Villa last summer, was limited to 22 league starts in 2019/20 due to injury and Smith wants better competition at right-back.

The 29-year-old registered four assists in 25 league appearances for Atletico last season, ranking in the top-10 in LaLiga for most successful crosses pg (1.3).
