Nottingham Forest release Aitor Karanka

Nottingham Forest have confirmed that Aitor Karanka has been relieved of his duties at the City Ground.

The Spaniard was appointed as Forest boss last January and the club are currently four points off the playoff spots after a 4-2 win over Leeds last time out.

It means that in each of the last nine years, Forest have changed their manager, with Slavisa Jokanovic the favourite to succeed Karanka at the City Ground.

“Aitor Karanka has asked to be released from his contract as the manager of Nottingham Forest Football Club,” a statement read on the club's official website.

“The club have agreed to this request and the terms of departure have been agreed. Both parties wish each other every success for the future.

“There will be no further comment from either party.

“Simon Ireland will take charge of first-team affairs until a new manager is appointed.”

No team has drawn more Championship games than Forest (12) this season.
