Borussia Dortmund have announced Mario Gotze has responded well to the first phase of his rehabilitation since being diagnosed with a metabolic disorder and will be able to play football again in the summer.
The Bundesliga outfit ruled out the 24-year-old indefinitely at the end of last month after it was revealed Gotze was suffering from metabolic disturbances that appeared to threaten the rest of his career.
Gotze won’t be able to feature for Dortmund again this season as they look to provide the versatile midfielder with the right care to get him back 100 per cent fit.
However, the club have announced the first stage of his rehabilitation has gone well and they are looking to start Gotze on ‘performance-orientated workout’ during the summer.
Gotze has endured a tough time since returning to the club from Bayern Munich at the start of the season. He had only managed nine league starts and had only scored one goal and provided one assist.
