Injury cuts short Vertonghen's European Championship

Jan Vertonghen will miss the remainder of the European Championship after sustaining an ankle injury in training.

The Belgium international had played every minute of Euro 2016 for Belgium, albeit at left-back, as the Red Devils go in pursuit of international glory.

They will now be without the Tottenham defender in their quest for success, however, with manager Marc Wilmots on the eve of the meeting with Wales confirming that the 29-year-old has damaged two ligaments in his ankle.

Earlier in the day, reports hinted that Vertonghen would be ruled out for up to four months, though scans suggests he will be ruled out for between six and eight weeks.

That would see the centre-back miss the start of the new season for Tottenham, who may now dip into the transfer market to bolster their defence this summer.
