Spurs part ways with Adebayor

Tottenham have announced they have released Emmanuel Adebayor from the final year of his contract by mutual consent.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino had already told the former Arsenal striker that he would never play again for the club and Adebayor was omitted from their Premier League and Europa League squads.

Adebayor, 31, joined Spurs from Real Madrid in 2011 and scored 35 league goals in 92 appearances but will now have to look elsewhere after being released by the club.

The Togo international had been strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa during the summer, but the move fell through after both parties failed to agree terms.

Adebayor will have to wait until January before being able to play again with Premier League rules permitting players must be free agents before the transfer window closes in order for them to join a club and start playing immediately.
