The Football Association has rejected Chelsea’s appeal to overturn John Terry’s red card during their 4-1 win over Peterborough on Sunday.
Terry, 35, was shown a straight red card by Kevin Friend in the 67th minute of Chelsea’s FA Cup third round win over the League One outfit Peterborough with the score at 3-0.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was adamant the club would appeal the ban but the current Premier League leaders have failed in their appeal and he will therefore serve a one-match ban against Leicester this weekend.
“John Terry will serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect after his wrongful dismissal claim was unsuccessful, following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing,” a statement read on the FA’s official website.
“The Chelsea defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity during The Emirates FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough United on Sunday [8 January 2017]."
It’s been a difficult campaign for the Chelsea captain, who has dropped down the pecking order under Conte this season and struggled to stay fit due to an ankle problem.
Terry has been sent off two times in his last six starts for Chelsea and has recieved three of the club's last six red cards in all competitions.
