Griezmann refuses to commit long-term future to Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann has hinted he could leave Atletico Madrid at the end of next season despite signing a new contract at the start of last month.

The France international was widely expected to join Manchester United this summer only to change his mind and remain at Atletico after the Spanish giants failed to overturn a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

Griezmann later signed a 12-month contract extension with a significant wage hike but kept the £100m release clause in his deal and has now refused to commit his long-term future to the club.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” Griezmann told FourFourTwo when asked about his long-term future. “I’m going to be playing for Atletico next season and after that we’ll see.

“All I am thinking about now is Atletico Madrid. I think it’s absurd to talk about something that is more than a year away.”

The 26-year-old has established himself in a tier below Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as one of the best players in Europe and news he has decided to remain at Atletico for next season is huge for Diego Simeone’s side.

In the last three La Liga campaigns only Lionel Messi (149), Cristiano Ronaldo (141), Luis Suarez (128) and Neymar (89) have scored and assisted more goals than Griezmann (74).
