Gabriel Jesus calls on Manchester City to keep star man
Gabriel Jesus has called on Manchester City to keep hold of Sergio Aguero for next season despite the fact the Argentina international has dropped down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola.
The arrival of Jesus in January has fuelled suggestions Aguero could be moved on at the end of the season after becoming second choice for the first time in his career.
Aguero still has a contract that runs until 2019 and Jesus insists City should do everything they can to keep hold of the 28-year-old this summer.
“Sergio is a very important player and essential to the club,” Jesus told The Sun. “Since the first time he arrived until now, he’s been a real star - the starting forward of the team.
“He has helped this club a lot and has had an amazing career here, so all the fans and all of us want him to stay at Manchester City. Since I met him I realised he is a really nice guy. We are all aware about his skills as a player.
“I’m very happy to see he is a good person, humble, charismatic - that’s very important for me as well. He became an idol because of his success here at Manchester City - he totally deserves it.”
Guardiola has tried to accommodate both Jesus and Aguero in the starting XI on the rare occasion both have been available but the consensus is that Jesus will be the main forward going forward and Aguero will have to accept a more restricted role or move on.
Since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2011, Aguero has scored more goals than any other Premier League player (120).
