LA LIGA PREVIEW: Race for European places hots up

With the top three all facing favourable ties this weekend the match of the round in La Liga takes place between the two sides directly below Barcelona, Atletico and Real Madrid. Fifth host fourth as Villarreal travel to face Sevilla. Unai Emery’s side boast a sensational home record and will need to build on a run of 12 consecutive league wins to be in with a chance of catching the Yellow Submarine. Marcelino’s men have drawn four successive away matches but the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan hasn’t witnessed a stalemate in the league all season.

Elsewhere Getafe have the unenviable task of looking to improve on a woeful run, picking up just one point from the last 24 available, against a Barcelona side in rampant form. Luis Enrique’s side are on an 11-match winning streak in La Liga, with Lionel Messi back to his best, scoring 8 goals in his last 4 appearances as he bids to catch up with Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Suarez in the Pichichi race. Rather dauntingly, Barcelona have also had nearly seven days rest in the build up to this match, which is the longest break they’ve had this year.

Ronaldo, however, will look to add to his 28-goal league tally at Las Palmas, with the promoted side coming into the game in fine form having won three consecutive games. Earlier in the day on Sunday Gary Neville gets his first taste of a Valencia derby against Levante but despite an upturn in results last month many will also tip it to be his last.
