Manchester City prepare new deal for out of favour defender
Manchester City will reward John Stones with a new contract to prove he is part of the club’s long-term future, claims The Daily Mirror.
Stones’ current deal is not due to expire until the summer of 2022 but the 24-year-old has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth for City this season.
Aymeric Laporte has established himself as Pep Guardiola’s first-choice centre-back since completing a £57.2m deal from Athletic Club in January last year.
With Laporte guaranteed a starting berth in City’s back four, Stones has been left to battle with Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany for the other spot in defence.
Stones has only started 20 league matches this season but he remains an integral part to City’s long-term plans.
City are ready to reward Stones with a bumper new contract to illustrate his worth to the club that will increase his current wage packet by £60,000-a-week.
Of players to have started a Premier League game this season, Stones has the best pass success rate (94.3%) in the division.
