Southgate set for permanent England role

Gareth Southgate will be named as new England manager this week, though the announcement is to be delayed until Wednesday to coincide with an FA board meeting, reports the Mail on Sunday.

Southgate has taken charge of the national team on an interim basis since Sam Allardyce’s sacking earlier in the year.

The former U21 boss is unbeaten since taking over the reins temporarily, with England now top of their World Cup qualifying group having taken 10 points from a possible 12.

Southgate set for permanent England role

Negotiations between the FA and Southgate’s representatives have been ongoing all week, with an agreement expected to be reached on Monday.

Steve Holland will continue as his number 2, though it remains to be seen whether that will be on a full-time basis or if he continues in his role with Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard is also potential coaching appointment by Southgate after the former Liverpool midfielder confirmed his retirement from the game last week.
