Newcastle midfielder Shelvey in line for shock World Cup call-up
Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has played his way into contention for Gareth Southgate’s England plans for the 2018 World Cup, reports The Times.
Shelvey is arguably one of England’s most in-form midfielders at the moment and has been integral to Newcastle’s recent purple patch of form.
The Magpies have won each of their last four and are now 10th and 13 points clear of the bottom three.
Gareth Southgate will reportedly attend Monday’s game between Everton and Newcastle to pay a closer inspection on Shelvey.
With Harry Winks, Jack Wilshere and Adam Lallana all major doubts for the 2018 World Cup, Shelvey has emerged as a shock candidate for Southgate.
The 26-year-old hasn’t played for England since an 11-minute cameo against France in November 2015.
Shelvey has played a direct hand in three Premier League goals this season and all of them have come in Newcastle’s winning run.
The Newcastle No.8 has been sent off twice in the Premier League this season, but has also improved his ill-discipline in recent months. In fact, Shelvey hasn’t even been booked in his last 10 matches.
Yes yes yes, being able to spray accurate balls over the top to the likes of Vardy, Rashford, and Sterling can stretch the field. Also how many times has Deli received long balls because of his clever runs behind the back line, Shelvey can provide that service. Obviously not a starter, but so much better than Livermore or Cook in terms of midfielders.
