Swansea appoint Clement

Swansea have announced they have appointed Paul Clement as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Clement, 44, was given permission by Bayern Munich to discuss a return to management over the weekend after being sounded out by the Premier League strugglers as they looked to fill their vacant managerial role.

Swansea sacked Bob Bradley last week after just 85 days in charge of the club and had been linked with a number of managers before pursuing Bayern’s assistant coach.

Clement, whose previous managerial stint didn’t even last one season during an eight-month stint with Derby, will watch Swansea’s clash with Crystal Palace from the stands on Tuesday night.

Alan Curtis will take charge of first-team duties for the second game in a row as Swansea desperately look to move off the bottom of the Premier League and cut Palace’s four-point gap one place outside the bottom three.

“We are delighted with the appointment of Paul Clement as our new head coach,” Swansea’s chairman Huw Jenkins told the club’s official website. “Paul has not only worked with some of Europe’s biggest football clubs but also the very best players in the world.

“Swansea City’s strength over many years has been the quality of the football coached on the training field. That has always been at the forefront of our success.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Paul can not only help us regain that footballing belief, but also restore some much needed pride back into the football club.”

Despite his reign as Derby manager being deemed a failure, Clement did leave Derby in fifth position when he was sacked. Not only that, but only four teams conceded fewer goals in the Championship than Derby (26) during his time in charge of the Rams.
