Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has conceded he is unsure whether David de Gea will sign for the club after his proposed move fell through on Monday.
De Gea, 24, looked set to return to the Spanish capital all summer before his move collapsed in the final seconds of deadline day at the start of the week.
The Spaniard is now expected to sign for Madrid on a free in the summer, when his contract with Manchester United expires, although Perez is not so certain.
“From now on I don’t know what will happen to the player,” Madrid’s president is quoted as saying by ESPN.
“After what happened I have not spoken to De Gea but [Real Madrid general director] Jose Angel Sanchez did.
“I was told that he was very affected because he had high hopes of joining Real Madrid.”
De Gea is now expected to fight for his spot at United with an eye on the Euro’s with Spain next summer. According to some, this could lead to the former Atletico Madrid ‘keeper renewing with Louis van Gaal’s side.
Van Gaal has opted to start summer signing Sergio Romero in all six of United’s games this season, with De Gea left to watch on from the stands.

De Gea sign a new contract (with the highest salary for a goalkeeper) ,the United fans love you (not like in Madrid). If you go there ,be sure you gonna get sticks from Athletico fans (for good reason) and a lot of Real fans gonna boo you at the first tiny mistake you make. I know you got homesick ,but it's pity for United at least sign a contract with a buyout clause of 35m and don't go for free. And you gonna get playing time and Euro spot in the national team.
