Manchester United interested in Napoli sensation

Manchester United are interested in signing Napoli striker Dries Mertens, according to Italian publication Calcio Mercato.

The Belgian has been in superb form for the Serie A side, who are one of two teams in Europe’s top five leagues yet to drop a point this season.

Indeed, Mertens has lead the Napoli attack brilliantly once more and has scored seven goals in Italy’s top tier this term, a return bettered only by Paulo Dybala (10) and Edin Dzeko (9).

A host of teams have taking a liking to the 30-year-old, though Napoli are understandably reluctant to cash in on their star man.

Manchester United are one of those monitoring Mertens situation in Naples as they ponder improving their attacking options.

At present, Romelu Lukaku is the club’s primary forward, while the returning Zlatan Ibrahimovic offers competition for the Belgian.

However, Lukaku will miss Belgium’s meeting with Bosnia-Herzegovina with an ankle problem, while Ibrahimovic is yet to resume full training after a season-ending knee injury sustained earlier in the year, which has seen United show an interest in Mertens.
