Paris Saint-Germain blocked from signing Monaco star

Paris Saint-Germain have been blocked from signing Monaco midfielder target Fabinho after a meeting between the club’s presidents, reports L’Equipe.

Monaco president Vadim Vasilyev and PSG chief Nasser al-Khelaifi reportedly had a meeting at a restaurant in Cannes on Thursday to cool relations between the two Ligue 1 giants after a tense few months centred around Fabinho’s future at the Principality Club.

Fabinho has been heavily linked with a move away from Monaco this summer after a breathtaking campaign for Leonardo Jardim’s side, which saw the French side won their first league title since 2000.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian this summer as he looks to bolster his midfield options and the Premier League giants have been given a boost in their pursuit following news Monaco have blocked PSG’s interest.

Unai Emery’s side had a €45m (£39.4m) bid for Fabinho rejected right at the start of the window and Vasilyev has now ruled out a move altogether as they look to avoid strengthening their main rival with one of their best players.

Monaco have already made more than £50m from player sales this summer and are on course to make another £50m from the impending departure of Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City.

The Ligue 1 champions are also currently wrestling to keep wonderkid Kylian Mbappe at the club and have reportedly rejected bids in excess of £100m for the teenager already this summer.

Fabinho finished the 2016/17 campaign as Monaco’s highest WhoScored rated player (7.41). Not only that, but only Diego Perotti scored more penalties without missing in Europe’s top five leagues as the 23-year-old last season (both 7).
