Manchester City veteran will be handed a new deal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has given the greenlight to reward veteran midfielder Yaya Toure with a new 12-month deal capping a remarkable change in fortunes for the veteran midfielder, reports The Manchester Evening News.

Toure, who turned 34 over the weekend, was deemed surplus to requirements by Guardiola at the start of the season and appeared destined to leave the club when his deal expires at the end of the current campaign.

However, the Ivorian midfielder has become a mainstay in the City side since being handed a surprise recall to the first-team back in November and his imperious performances in the last few weeks have even convinced Guardiola to extend his stay.

Toure’s presence in the middle of the park has given Guardiola an element of control in matches and that was only highlighted further when he didn’t feature in City’s 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at the end of last month.

This point is further illustrated by the fact Toure averages more passes per Premier League game than any other City player this season (70.7).
