Everton have announced they have broken their club transfer record to sign Swansea creator Glyfi Sigurdsson in a deal reportedly worth an initial £40m that could rise to £45m.
Sigurdsson has been heavily linked with a move to Goodison Park all summer and has finally secured a move to Ronald Koeman’s side after the Toffees made a breakthrough in discussions with their Premier League rivals.
The Iceland international, who is in line to make his Everton debut against Manchester City on Monday, has put pen to paper on a five-year deal that will run until June 2022 and will wear the No.18 shirt at Goodison Park.
“Hopefully I will continue to create goals and score goals for the team and contribute to the kind of success we’re seeking at the club,” he told the club’s official website.
“This is an ambitious club and it is clear we are moving in a really good direction. The most important thing is that this team keeps winning games and climbing the table - and does that throughout the season.
“For myself, I would like to score as many goals as possible and create as many goals for my teammates as I can. These are my targets.”
Sigurdsson enjoyed a sensational campaign for Swansea last season despite the fact Paul Clement’s side were battling relegation for most of the campaign. In fact, only Kevin De Bruyne (18) and Christian Eriksen (15) provided more assists in the Premier League than Everton’s new record signing (13).
However, the 27-year-old has established himself as a deadly set-piece taker and is renowned for creating and scoring chances from dead ball situations. In fact, Sigurdsson created more chances from set-pieces than any other Premier League player last term (43).
