Manchester United outcast contemplating fresh five-year deal

Anthony Martial has had a change of heart at Manchester United and could sign a five-year deal currently on the table from the Premier League giants, claims The Times.

The France international rejected new terms earlier this year and was keen to leave Old Trafford after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho wanted to sell Martial this summer in order to accommodate a new attacker he prefers but the club blocked the 22-year-old’s departure.

Martial has entered the final year of his current United deal, although the club have an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

It looked likely that United would have to trigger his extension and cash in next summer but now Martial could end up pledging his long-term future to the club.

United have made a disastrous start to the season and Mourinho is under huge pressure to save his skin in the coming weeks.

The board have given Mourinho is backing and have no intention of changing manager at the moment but Martial believes he could outlast the Portuguese at the club.

Mourinho’s departure would open the door for Martial to revive his United career and it seems unlikely that the former will last the season at the current rate.

It remains to be seen how Mourinho will react to Martial extending his stay at the club as chief executive Ed Woodward is aware he doesn’t want the forward.

Martial was dropped from the matchday squad for United’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Monday night and is unlikely to start many games under the current regime.

Since joining United in 2015, Martial has scored more Premier League goals than any player at the club (24).
