Pellegrino relieved of Southampton duties

Mauricio Pellegrino has been sacked as Southampton manager, the south coast side have confirmed.

Saints fell to a 3-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday to leave them just one point above the relegation zone.

“Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has parted company with First Team Manager Mauricio Pellegrino,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“Assistant Manager Carlos Compagnucci and Assistant First Team Coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future.

“The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway.”

Pellegrino relieved of Southampton duties

Saints have drawn more games (13) than any other Premier League team this season and are on the longest current home winless run (8) in England’s top tier.

Pellegrino lasted less than a year having replaced Claude Puel at the St. Mary’s helm last summer.
