Arsenal to discuss Lacazette future, says Arteta

Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal to resolve Alexandre Lacazette's future at the club.

Lacazette still has two years left to run on his current Arsenal deal but the striker has been heavily linked with a summer move away in recent months.

The 29-year-old has been mooted as a possible makeweight in a deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

Lacazette was originally meant to join Atletico before the Spanish outfit were hit with a FIFA-imposed transfer ban and he ended up moving to Arsenal instead.

The former France international was one of the first names on the teamsheet during his first six months at Arsenal but that has changed since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's arrival in January 2018.

With Aubameyang and Lacazette often left to fight for just one starting position, the latter has found himself on the bench more often.

Lacazette has only started nine of a possible 15 league matches since Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December and now faces competition from 21-year-old Eddie Nketiah and 19-year-old Gabriel Martinelli.

With Arsenal now optimistic Aubameyang will renew his contract, Lacazette's future looks even more bleak and Arteta wants it resolved before the end of the future.

"We have to have a chat about the next step with him and get his ideas and his feelings," Sky Sport quote Arteta as saying ahead of Tuesday's clash with Leicester. "As I said, I am really happy with him.

"He's a player that I've always liked, even when I wasn't here, because of what he bring to the team: his qualities, his ability, his work rate. So let's see.

"Now we are in a crucial moment. It's no time to talk about a lot of contract situations. We still have time and we will do it in the right moment."

Lacazette has eight league goals for the campaign after coming off the bench to score in Arsenal's impressive 2-0 win away to Wolves at the weekend.

The Frenchman is in danger of failing to reach double figures for goals in a single league campaign for the first time since 2012/13 (3 goals).

Lacazette brought up his eighth league goal of the campaign in the weekend's 2-0 win away to Wolves and Arsenal have five games left to play.
