Lyon reach deal with Benfica defender

Lyon have reached a €6m (£5.3m) agreement with Benfica for the signature of left-back Fernando Marcal, reports RMC, via Get French Football.

The 28-year-old joined Benfica from Nacional in 2015 but has never played for the Portuguese giants, instead spending two loan spells away at Turkish side Gaziantepspor and Ligue 1 club Guingamp last season.

Marcel impressed in Ligue 1 with Guingamp last season and Lyon have used part of the €41.5m (£36.5m) raised from the sale of Corentin Tolisso to Bayern Munich to bring the left-back to the club.

The Brazilian will reportedly undergo his medical at Lyon, who fended off competition from a number of their European rivals, on Thursday before the deal can officially be confirmed.

Marcel was among the top 10 rated players in Ligue 1 last season (7.43), while only Marcelo (10) registered more assists of all defenders in Europe’s top five leagues (Marcel - 7).

The experienced defender finished the 2016/17 campaign in the WhoScored Ligue 1 Team of the Season and will help solve a problem position in the Lyon squad given first-choice left-back Jeremy Morel is now 33.
