Casillas set to leave Porto in January

Iker Casillas is poised to leave Portuguese giants Porto in January due to Financial Fair Play [FFP] restraints on the club, reports AS.

Casillas has not featured in Porto’s last three matches after surprisingly being dropped between the sticks for their 3-2 defeat away to RB Leipzig in the Champions League earlier this month.

Initially there was no explanation offered behind Casillas’ shock absence but it has now been reported that Porto cannot afford to keep playing the veteran goalkeeper.

Madrid took on half of Casillas’ cost during the first two years of his Porto career, but the Portuguese side have been made to cover the full amount this season and are starting to suffer financially as a result.

Sergio Conceicao’s side have instead been forced to put their faith in 24-year-old Jose Sa, but the Portuguese goalkeeper has shown he is capable of filling the void left by Casillas, pushing the veteran goalkeeper closer to the exit door in January.

Since the start of last season, Casillas has kept more at least eight more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Portuguese Liga NOS (25).
