Newcastle plot audacious raid for Premier League star

Newcastle United want Gylfi Sigurdsson to help consolidate their place in the Premier League next season, reports The Sun.

Sigurdsson, 27, has enjoyed a sensational campaign for Premier League strugglers Swansea this season and is expected to be subject of high interest in the summer.

Everton and West Ham are already interested in signing the Iceland international but could now face competition from Championship side Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez’s side are expected to earn promotion back to England’s top tier at the first attempt this season and the Spaniard wants Sigurdsson to help consolidate their spot in the Premier League next season.

However, Newcastle’s attempts to secure Sigurdsson in a deal worth £15m would seem unlikely, with Swansea more than likely looking to fetch double that price unless they are relegated themselves.

No midfielder has scored or assisted more goals in the Premier League this season than Sigurdsson (18), while no player has registered more assists in Europe’s top five leagues than the Swansea ace (11).
