Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed Manuel Neuer will be made the club’s new captain in the wake of Philipp Lahm’s retirement.
Neuer has spent the last six years at Bayern and has established himself as the best goalkeeper in the world in that time.
The 31-year-old, who is also skipper for the Germany national team, will now become the fourth goalkeeper to captain Bayern after Oliver Kahn, Raimond Aumann and Sepp Maier.
“Our No.1 is the No.1,” ESPN quote Rummenigge as saying in Shanghai. “Manuel is a seasoned professional and will take over the armband from Philipp.”
Neuer has not travelled with the Bayern squad for their pre-season tour of Asia after opting to remain in Munich to continue his recovery from a broken metatarsal suffered against Real Madrid back in April.
In the last four Bundesliga campaigns only Bastian Oczipka (362) has won possession the defensive third more times than Neuer (344).
