Manchester City in talks for new goalkeeper

Manchester City are in talks to sign Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen in a deal worth £7.8m, claims The Daily Mail.

Steffen has spent the last two years in MLS after a failed stint at Bundesliga side Freiburg.

The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Bristol City in the summer but could now end up joining Premier League champions City.

City were forced to recall 20-year-old goalkeeper Aro Muric from his loan spell with Dutch side NAC Breda in August following Claudio Bravo’s season-ending injury in August.

Despite the fact Muric is inexperienced, City do not plan to blood Steffen into their first-team immediately if they can pull off a deal for the 23-year-old.

Steffen would instead spend the second half of the season on loan at Spanish side Girona before returning to City next summer.

Columbus Crew were eliminated from the MLS play-offs by New York Red Bulls earlier this month and Steffen could have played his final game for the club.

Only Luis Robles (14) and Tim Melia (13) have kept more clean sheets than Steffen (10) in MLS this season.
