Liverpool defender poised to miss the rest of the year

Liverpool have been served an early Christmas blow with news Alberto Moreno is unlikely to play again this year, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Moreno left the pitch in tears midway through Liverpool’s 7-0 demolition of Spartak Moscow in midweek after suffering an ankle injury.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still unsure how long Moreno will be sidelined for but the early indications are that the Spaniard will not feature at all during the busy festive period.

Liverpool have already lost centre-back Joel Matip for the rest of the year and Moreno’s absence is a further blow for an already frail backline.

The 25-year-old was widely expected to leave Liverpool over the summer but the defender has completely turned his Anfield career around this season, to his credit.

Moreno has remarkably started 18 of Liverpool’s 21 matches across league and European competition and successfully kept summer signing Andrew Robertson on the sidelines.

In fact, only Liverpool team-mate James Milner (5) has provided more Champions League assists than Moreno (3) this season.
