Lionel Messi has reached an agreement in principle to extend his stay at Barcelona until 2021 or 2022, reports MARCA.
The 29-year-old will only have 12 months remaining on his current deal this summer and Barcelona have understandably made resolving his future as their No.1 priority.
Ernesto Valverde’s side have now agreed on a salary and the bonuses their star man will recieve and now they need to decide whether the duration of the contract will be three or four years before making the news official.
Part of the new deal will see Messi’s current €250m (£216m) release clause increase to €400m (£346.9m), as Barcelona move to ensure the Argentina international will spend the rest of his time in Europe at the Camp Nou.
Despite only finishing the season as Copa Del Rey champions, Messi enjoyed another breathtaking campaign. The Barcelona No.10 scored 11 goals in nine matches in the Champions League and finished the campaign as the top goalscorer in Europe’s top five leagues (37).
