Monaco rival Manchester United for Championship winger

Manchester United are close to making a breakthrough in talks to sign Swansea starlet Daniel James, claims the London Evening Standard.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been chasing James’ signature for the best part of a month after ending their interest in Borussia Dortmund teenager Jadon Sancho.

The England international is not interested in joining United at this moment in time after the Red Devils missed out on Champions League football for next season.

United have been locked in talks with Swansea for a number of weeks but put the brakes on a transfer to give James space following the passing of his father.

Swansea are holding out for nearly £20m for the 21-year-old, who has one year left on his current deal, which is twice as much as what United are hoping to pay.

Solskjaer’s side are working with Swansea to reach a compromise and have accelerated talks following news French side Monaco are monitoring James’ future.

Monaco’s interest is unlikely to impact James’ desire to join United but it does work in Swansea’s favour of driving his price up.

James played a direct hand in 11 goals in 33 league games for Swansea last season and came close to joining Championship rivals Leeds in January.
