Italian boss commits to Premier League club

Swansea have announced Francesco Guidolin has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal after successfully leading the south Wales outfit to safety this season.

Guidolin, 60, was named Garry Monk’s successor in January on a deal that ran until the end of the season with Swansea one point above the bottom three.

However, relegation fears were quickly put to bed under the former Udiense manager’s stewardship and he has now committed to a further two years despite reported interest from the Italian football federation.

“I’m pleased to confirm that we have reached an agreement with Francesco on a new two-year contract,” Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins told the club’s official website.

“Francesco full deserves the chance to continue his good work into the new campaign. He was prepared to come into the club at such a difficult time and put himself in a pressure situation with the club fighting for survival.

“He has achieved the goal of securing top-flight football for this club with plenty to spare and has earned the right to start afresh next season. It’s going to be another challenge for everyone, but we are looking forward to seeing how far he can take this squad of players over a full season.”

Since being appointed midway through January, only four teams have taken more points in the Premier League than Swansea (27), who go into the last game of the season 12 points above the drop zone.
