Las Palmas manager to step down at the end of the season

Quique Setien has announced he will step down as manager of Las Palmas at the end of the current campaign.

The 58-year-old has been manager of Las Palmas since October 2015 and has transformed the Yellows into one of the most entertaining sides in Spain’s top flight.

Las Palmas were in talks to extend the Spaniard’s stay at the club but Setien has now revealed the differences in talks have convinced him to move on at the end of the season.

“When conversations began [over a new contract] it appeared to be only a matter of time before an agreement was reached as the questions to be resolved were minimal, but they have been increasing as time has gone on,” AS quote Setien as saying in his press conference on Saturday.

“Those differences have now become irreconcilable. I cannot thank the club enough for taking me on 18 months ago. It is clear in my mind that we will fight until the end of the season to finish in the best position possible."

“There will be time for farewells at the end of the season. I am aware of the frustration this could cause fans, who have given me their complete support since I arrived in the Canary Islands, but I think this is the right decision.”

Las Palmas were fighting for their La Liga status when Setien took over and now they making waves across the continent with their vibrant, entertaining brand of football. This is perhaps best illustrated by the fact Las Palmas have both scored and conceded 100 goals in his 68 matches in charge.
