Liverpool make first major signing under Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has made his first major signing as Liverpool manager after the Merseysiders confirmed the capture of Schalke defender Joel Matip on a pre-contractual agreement.

The 24-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season and the central defender had already rejected Schalke’s attempts to extend his stay.

Liverpool had been firmly linked with a move for the Cameroon international and they have finally agreed terms with the central defender.

Since the start of August 2009, only Daniel Baier (424) has made more interceptions in the Bundesliga than Matip (421).
