Newcastle want Stoke defender for Premier League challenge

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has earmarked the signature of Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross as the ideal defender to help them consolidate a place in the Premier League next season, reports The Independent.

The Magpies are currently in a fight with Brighton for the Championship title but both sides are expected to gain promotion with third-placed Huddersfield 10 points behind them.

With five games remaining in the Championship, Newcastle can all but plan for next season back in the Premier League and Benitez wants to end Shawcross’ nine-year stint at Stoke and bring him to St. James’ Park in the summer.

Shawcross is still a regular for Stoke under Mark Hughes but the Potters have let his contract run down, which is due to expire in 2018 and Newcastle are ready to pounce on any uncertainty about his long-term future at the club.

Since August 2011 only Gareth McAuley (600) has won more aerial duels in the Premier League of all defenders than Shawcross (576).
