Manchester United veteran gets contract extension

Manchester United have triggered their option in Ashley Young’s contract to a further 12 months, claims The Daily Mail.

Young’s current deal was due to expire in the summer but now Jose Mourinho’s side have retained his services until the end of next season.

He looked set to make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League 12 months ago but has since developed into a key player for Mourinho.

Young has been one of the best left backs in the Premier League this season and now looks favourite to nail down that position for England at the 2018 World Cup.

The 32-year-old ended a four-year exile from the England squad in November and is currently the best option available for Gareth Southgate on current form.

Young had hoped his performances this season would have secured a new deal but United have instead opted to trigger a 12-month extension for the time being.

In fact, Young is the highest WhoScored rated left-back in the Premier League this season (7.26).
