Wilshere confident of World Cup spot

Jack Wilshere is confident of forcing his way back in to Gareth Southgate’s England squad in time for the 2018 World Cup after capturing a Premier League spot for Arsenal.

Southgate left Wilshere out of his last England squad and warned the Arsenal midfielder he would need to play regularly in the Premier League to have any chance of making next summer’s World Cup.

Wilshere was heading for a January move away from Arsenal until Aaron Ramsey’s injury presented the 25-year-old with a run in the Premier League earlier this month and now he is targeting Southgate’s England squad.

“I think so,” The Daily Telegraph quote Wilshere as saying when asked whether he is making progress towards Southgate’s England squad. “I have proved to myself I can play in the Premier League, I trust my body again and I am confident that I can affect games. That is all I can do, and then we will see if the England manager picks me.”

Wilshere will only have six months remaining on his current Arsenal deal next month and Arsene Wenger’s side are yet to sit down and talk about a renewal.

Had Ramsey not got injured, then Wilshere may well have been forced to leave in January to find regular playing time for the second half of the campaign.

The Arsenal No.10 hasn’t turned out for England since their failed Euro 2016 campaign and was last named in a Three Lions squad over 12 months ago.
