Atalanta manager signs new deal

Atalanta have announced Gian Piero Gasperini has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal keeping him at the club until at least 2020.

Gasperini was reportedly only one game away from being sacked at the start of the season and news of his renewal caps what has been a remarkable turnaround for the club this season.

Atalanta have been the surprise package in Serie A this season and are now poised to secure their place in the Europa League next season.

“It is a historic day for Atalanta,” Gasperini told the club’s official website. “I am happy to confirm my renewal at the club, it was never in doubt.

“I am very happy, I feel lucky that the president chose me last year. I hoped to do a good job, the president believed in me.

“Everyone, starting from the fans, has been decisive in this season, but we still need to finish it off. Fifth place is our minimum objective.”

Gasperini is currently winning more points per game at Atalanta (1.87) than at any other club in his managerial career.

The 59-year-old has won 67.7% of his matches at Atalanta since becoming manager in June 2014.
