Arsenal target new centre-back

Arsenal have made a move for Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, reports Sky Sports via Sky Germany.

The Gunners are keen to bring in a new defender in the wake of Per Mertesacker and Gabriel’s respective injuries and Laurent Koscielny’s extended leave of absence.

No offer has been made for Mustafi, who has a £42m release clause, though Arsenal are confident they can negotiate that fee down.

The 24-year-old has flown to UK as part of Valencia’s pre-season training preparations, but his agent will fly to Spain to negotiate a deal that would see him move to London.

Despite a disappointing season for Valencia, Mustafi impressed, averaging the second most interceptions per game (4.4) in La Liga.
